For 1959, the divisions at GM once again went through a serious redesign program of its full-size cars, offering thinner pillars and roof lines, elongated rear ends, elaborate grilles and less chrome than previous years. The restraint was fantastically fresh, ushering in the new era of design, ushering in the 1960s, a time when beltlines were long, low and flat, a time when the greenhouse was very glassy – the future was here. At Buick, the move was taken very seriously. The LeSabre, Invicta and topline Electra 225 each featured a unique slanted headlight design with the ultra-stylized Fashion-Aire Dynastar Grille, first seen in 1958.
The Indy 500 would be paced by a Buick Electra 225 Convertible, and contrary to what many claim, the 225 did not reference the horsepower, but rather the wheelbase length. Like the exteriors, the interiors were highly revised, with a dashboard fit for an aircraft or maybe a spaceship, upholstery patterns that were elegant and clean, yet modern with a sporty flavor. This 1959 Buick Invicta Convertible has undergone a comprehensive restoration and emerged finished in a deep, reflective Black which perfectly serves as a backdrop for the glittering brightwork. Fitted with a white power-operated Convertible top, the stunning Invicta rolls on wide whitewall radial tires with chrome wire wheels, absolutely tying the entire look together.
Powered by the 364 CI Nailhead V-8 engine, Buicks have long given a lengthy list of standard amenities, and this one is no exception, with power steering, power brakes, an automatic transmission, dual sideview mirrors, a vinyl-covered dashboard and an AM/FM radio to list a few. The interior is finished with two-tone Black and White upholstery, the door panels matching, but highlighted with Silver detailing that ties the overall look of the interior in with the dashboard.
