It was called “Fresh, Fine and Fashionable” in the magazines, and the 1959 Impala arrived on the scene featuring yet another reworking by the styling division of Chevrolet. This release culminated the 1950s era for the brand and took advantage of in-vogue crisp edges and fins.

The Impala here is a top-of-the-model, a convertible with excellent optioning and the Super Turbo-Thrust 348/280 HP Tri-Power V-8 engine, which was offered optionally. With 9.5:1 compression topped by a trio of 2-barrel Rochester carburetors, the W-head big-block engine was instantly identifiable once the hood was raised, as it was painted bright orange with a large-diameter black air cleaner. Behind this is a Powerglide transmission, and this car comes with optional factory air conditioning plus power steering and brakes.

The exterior is done in Code 900 Tuxedo Black with the exclusive 1959 chrome trim, a matched black soft top with premium glass rear window and a red boot, and a highly detailed undercarriage. From the front, the ribbed and stamped grille separates real T-3 coded quad headlamps, with a Chevrolet emblem and callout on the leading edge of the hood. A centered chrome side spear with optional door handle guards runs along the length of the body sides, while the tail lamps are nestled in their distinctive “cat-eye” housings beneath dramatically rising, arched fins.

Inside, this luxury-ordered car came with power windows, the power six-way seat, a power top, deluxe heater, padded dash and a radio with dual rear-mount antennas. Meanwhile, the upholstery is done in brilliant red with white ribbing. Adding it a further sense of style are the spinner hubcaps and real BF Goodrich Silvertown tires, with a still-stickered fresh spare tucked in the trunk’s side well. Production numbers found Chevrolet sales buoyed by over 400,000 Impalas, of which about 15% were V-8 convertibles. For those looking for a classic ‘50s droptop built at the dawn of the big-block age, this Impala is indeed “Fresh, Fine and Fashionable.”

Cars in great condition runs and drives well.
