The Impala was restyled on the GM B platform for the first time for 1961. The new body styling was more trim and boxy than the 1958–1960 models. Sport Coupe models featured a "bubbleback" roof line style for 1961, and a unique model, the 2-door pillared sedan, was available for 1961 only. It was rarely ordered.
In a 1961 commercial for the Chevrolet Impala, the narrator says, “Chevrolet for ’61, made the way you want a car made—with classic simplicity.” Before adding, “Chevrolet interiors styled with a mark of modern beauty.” Indeed, the all-new Impala was a stylish muscle car. Chevy redesigned the dash instrument panel “for easier use,” according to the promotional video, and it also updated the foam cushion lounge seats to provide extra comfort during trips. The tachometer was also refreshed to recreate a more contemporary look.
