The Walk-Around & Drive By

THE STORY:
Having already transplanted Chevrolet’s wicked 427/425 HP engine into small batches of Camaros with a small dedicated crew at his Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Chevrolet dealership in 1967 and 1968, Don Yenko instigated the factory installation of these potent powerplants for 1969. Using Chevrolet’s Central Office Production Order (COPO) system normally reserved for fleet, taxi and police orders, GM’s 400 CI engine-displacement limit for the Camaro (and midsize Chevelle) was shattered, unleashing one of the quickest and most collectible of all American supercars.

Designated COPO 9561, the 427 CI engine package for the Camaro also included the new-for-1969 ZL2 Cowl Induction hood, V48 four-core heavy-duty radiator, aluminum intake manifold and bellhousing, heavy-duty springs and 12-bolt Positraction rear axle with heat-treated ring and pinion. Depending on the source quoted, only approximately 1,000 COPO 9561 Camaros, 1,015 according to some experts, were produced in all for 1969.

This factory COPO 9561 1969 Chevrolet Camaro is a thrilling find, ordered new with the 427 CI L72 V-8 engine, per the Yenko Supercar Registry. The product of a comprehensive restoration with 10 miles of use since completion, this legendary muscle car is one of 1,015 COPO 9561 cars produced for 1969. Retrofitted with a Yenko-cast aluminum engine block and aluminum cylinder heads, this COPO Camaro also features a 4-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter. Sporting the proper X44 code on the trim tag, this no-frills, all-out performer is equipped with J52 power front disc brakes, a ZL2 Cowl Induction hood, color-keyed steel wheels with small-diameter hubcaps, Goodyear Polyglas tires and bucket seats with headrests. Other choice highlights include auxiliary Stewart Warner underdash gauges for oil pressure, water temperature and amperage, front and rear spoilers and rear bumper guards.

Its awards include AACA First Place awards at the 2007 and 2013 Grand National meets in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Moline, Illinois, respectively, and an AACA Senior Ward at the 2014 Grand National meet in Lebanon, Tennessee. A multiple-time AACA Preservation Award winner, this COPO Camaro is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Camaro Hi-Performance, a parts number list from COPO Connection, AACA membership forms, several Kenny Kent 5th Annual Car Show dash plaques prominently featuring this car, an owner’s manual and a copy of Bob McClurg’s “Yenko: The Man, The Machines, The Legend.”
