Chevrolet went bigger than ever before with its all-new 1958 lineup, and a body-off restoration completed in 2008 by J.R. Burkholder in Paradise, Pennsylvania, returned this Impala convertible to the spotlight at the top of the line. The full-size convertible packs a big-block V-8 under the hood, as well as a host of options and accessories in the cabin. The Impala won Antique Automobile Club of America 1st Junior and Senior awards after the restoration was completed in 2008, and then grabbed the AACA National Award at the 2012 James Melton Memorial Cup Annual Convention in Philadelphia.
The 348 CI Tri-Power V-8 lives up to its name and 280 HP rating with a dual-snorkel air cleaner and triple Rochester 2-barrel carburetors. A Turboglide automatic transmission with triple turbines and a Positraction-equipped 4-link rear axle dispatches power to the pavement. The X-braced frame with all coil spring suspension teams up with power steering and power brakes for what Chevrolet promised was a floating new ride and crisp road control. The wider, longer and stronger chassis carries a low-slung Fisher body with over 17-feet of Sculpturamic style from the quad headlamps to the rear fenders and six-across tail lights.
Lowering the power-operated top showcases an unprecedented level of Chevrolet luxury and modern features. Tinted glass and a padded dash offer a panoramic view of the road over the competition-styled steering wheel. Power windows and a power split front bench with tri-color upholstery, underdash courtesy lights, a tissue dispenser, day and night interior mirror and an illuminated ashtray bring living room comfort out on the road. Dual rear antennas and a Wonderbar signal-seeking AM radio automatically scan the airwaves for optimal fidelity through the in-dash and rear-seat speakers. The Impala rolls on wide whitewall tires dressed with spinner wheel covers and comes with fender skirts, a continental spare tire kit with correct jack and a correct convertible top boot for parade duty or formal occasions.
