THE STORY

The old saying was, “See the USA in a Chevrolet.” This special 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible, however, should have also noted, “… and then see the world”. Originally built on the Flint, Michigan, assembly line for export, the original speedometer reads in kilometers (a speedometer that reads in miles is included in this sale). This car benefits from a frame-off restoration and features many of the highlights of this unique model year.

Coming off the stellar sales season of 1957, the Chevrolet passenger car line was reworked to make the vehicles larger. The Impala was an offshoot of that effort, being a sport design with added trim as standard equipment. Also new for this model year was Chevrolet’s just-designed big-block powerplant, the Turbo Thrust V-8. At 348 CI, this engine is instantly recognized by its unique valve covers, which in part gave visual reference to the engineering nomenclature of the “W-series” engine. This example has the optional Tri-Power setup with correct date-coded 2-barrel carburetors and cast intake manifold. Mild detailing includes the ribbed Edelbrock aluminum valve covers and oval air cleaner, while behind this is a Turboglide transmission. There is also power steering and power brakes on this car.

The Impala has been refinished in new white paint and features a new interior and convertible top. The trim level is high-grade inside as well, done in blue vinyl with tri-color inserts. There are power windows, a power seat, AM radio with dual rear-angled antennas, the compass, a tissue dispenser and a clock as well. The exterior represents this era’s copious chrome with a broad side spear, a Continental kit, blue top boot, fender skirts, exhaust exit side ports, Chevrolet and Impala model lettering and dual fender-mounted rear-view mirrors. Finally, there is an upgrade to Halogen headlights in the grille and blue dot tail lights. With wide Whitewall tires and spinner hubcaps, a convertible Chevrolet was a great way to “see the USA” (and even more) in 1958. This is a car refined for enjoyment with the deluxe trim level that will let its new owner also be seen in it.
